Note: Due to ongoing current events, this program will not run in the summer of 2024.

About the Program

The Summer Berkeley Global Internship Program in Haifa was launched in 2022 as a partnership between the Helen Diller Institute, Yahel Israel, and the UC Berkeley Study Abroad Office. Participants in the Global Internship Program gain first-hand knowledge, connections, and international work experience through an academic internship in a social sector field of interest. Generally, participants intern at local nonprofits, public projects and grassroots organizations working in the fields of social change, such as women's rights, education, or immigration. Participants also earn six academic credits through two mandatory courses taken during the program — one in the classroom and one consisting of weekly educational field trips. Substantial scholarships are available to all admitted students (including non-UC Berkeley students) to assist with flight costs, living expenses, and program fees, courtesy of the Helen Diller Institute for Jewish Law and Israel Studies.

This program is made possible by the support of the Helen Diller Foundation and other generous donors as part of the Helen Diller Institute’s Cross-Bay Israel Studies Initiative.

About Haifa

The Global Internship program in Israel will be based in the beautiful coastal city of Haifa. Haifa is the third largest city in Israel and is unique in its diversity including a large Arab population, immigrant populations from Ethiopia and the former Soviet Union, and many others. This program will offer you the opportunity to immerse yourself in this multicultural city and engage with Israel off the beaten path.

Application

Please visit the Berkeley Study Abroad website to apply. If you have any questions, please contact Matthew Gordan, the Helen Diller Institute’s Assistant Director of Student Engagement and Programs, at mgordan@berkeley.edu

“This experience has just been monumental. I compare it to every other great experience I have ever had and it stands the test. Going to the Western Wall and parts of Jerusalem is like walking on 3,000 years of history. It is so profound to learn about the history that has built what you see, and the contemporary politics and controversies. It is an immense experience. I just want to say that I compare it to every other amazing experience I have had and this one continues to just stand out.”
