Emett Mendel is a first-year student majoring in Data Science and planning to double major in Political Economy. His academic interests include the intersection of politics and technology, specifically AI policy, using data science for the good of society, and Spanish language and culture. He is part of the AI for Community Health Workers URAP project, working to bring effective AI tools to CHWs in underserved countries and improve global health. Beyond his studies at Berkeley, Emett is a member of intramural pickleball and ultimate frisbee teams, the Cal Hiking and Outdoor Society, Salsa Club, and is the founder of Whimsical Wednesdays. In his free time, he enjoys reading, learning to play the guitar, discovering new movies, playing soccer, and practicing calisthenics.
